Showing Respect

In a recent speech by a Maori Party spokesman in Wellington, the notion of honor is raised regarding the Maori/New Zealand treaty. As we anticipate the ratification of the United League of Indigenous Nations treaty later this month, the concept of equality, not uniformity, is especially apropos.

As the governments of New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and the United States continue to subvert their treaties with native peoples, it is perhaps beneficial to explore what partnering with First Nations is all about. According to the Maori, it revolves around showing respect for the authority, the resources, and the world views of both partners.

That seems like a good place to begin.
